Chapter 16: Co-Credit

Lennon pulled the cape off his face and read the text over my shoulder, slowly.

"Bring a pen, babe," he read.

"Don't."

"I'm just practicing."

He sat up on the couch.

"You want me to come?"

"I want you to stay outside," I said. "If you come in, you'll throw him in the ocean."

"It's right there."

"That's the problem."

We had two days.

I didn't sleep much in either of them.

Izzy kept cutting. I kept fighting her. Mom kept bringing sandwiches nobody asked for.

Nobody said the word Friday out loud.

On Friday, at five to noon, I walked down the Seal Beach pier with the agreement folded in my back pocket.

The cafe at the end of the pier was packed.

Fishermen in the corner booth. A birthday party of eight-year-olds in paper crowns. Tourists sharing fries with the gulls.

Lennon stopped at the rail outside the window.

He leaned his elbows on it and looked at the water.

He could see our table through the glass.

Dallas was already there.

White linen. Sunglasses in his hair. The man in the gray suit beside him with a fat pen.
