Chapter 21: Under the Pier
Izzy reached for the projector.
"Don't stop it," I said.
Episode thirty-four kept playing on the bedsheet.
The head of content walked through the crowd in her black sneakers.
She stopped in front of me, next to the generator.
"Ms. Wheeler," she said over the noise. "My tent is half empty. My investors are watching a livestream of a bedsheet."
"I sent you the cut on the twenty-seventh."
"I know. I watched it this morning." She looked at the sheet. "I wanted to see if anybody else would."
Dallas came up beside her.
He was smiling his waiter smile.
"This is a pirated screening of my show," he said loudly, turning to the crowd. "I want that on the record. I wrote Sugar Tide. My drafts are dated February. My lawyer has them."
The salon women turned around in their beach chairs.
"That's the shrimp man," chair three said.
I stepped out in front of the projector, into its light.
The surfer and the girl moved across my face and my arms.
"If you wrote it," I said, "tell them how it ends."
