Chapter 6: My Grandmother's Scarf
The garbage bag on my car window flapped the whole way up the coast.
Lennon sat in the passenger seat with the voice memo of episode thirty-six in one ear.
Izzy sat in the back with her camera in her lap.
"Tell me the plan again," she said.
"I take my scarf back."
"That's not a plan. That's a sentence."
"It's a short plan."
The beach house had a new security guard at the stairs, a kid in a polo shirt.
He looked at my face and then at his phone.
"You're the stepsister."
"I'm the writer," I said, and walked past him.
He didn't stop me. He looked like nobody had paid him either.
Dallas's set was half the size it had been on Sunday.
Three film students ran the gear. A woman I didn't know held the boom.
Sasha stood at the water's edge in a white dress, the yellow scarf tied over her hair.
Dallas was at his monitor on the deck with the megaphone in his lap.
"Rolling," one of the students called.
I walked straight into the shot.
"Cut!" Dallas yelled. "Cut, cut. Get her out of my frame."
Nobody moved to get me out of his frame.
Sasha saw me coming. Her mouth opened.
"Hold still," I said.
I untied the knot at the back of her neck with both hands.
I slid my grandmother's scarf off her hair, folded it once, and held it against my chest.
"Hey!" Sasha said. "That's wardrobe!"
"It's my grandmother's," I said. "She wore it to every one of my school plays. It was in my car on Monday night, in my laptop bag, when somebody put a rock through the window."
The film students looked at each other.
