Chapter 15: The Map in Her Closet
Dominic's POV
I woke up alone in the bed, and my wife was standing by the window with a photograph in her hand.
She held it out to me without a word.
I looked at the wreck of her father's car upside down on the rocks, and at the shadow in the corner of the frame.
It was the long shadow of a person lying on a hill with a rifle.
"She was in my house," Ila said. "She stood over us."
"Stay here."
"No."
"Please, Ila. My mother's coming back at noon, and the captains who kept their pins are outside in the street. You're the safest woman in Philadelphia."
"And you?"
"I know where she lives."
She looked at me for a long moment.
"Bring me what you find," she said. "Before you tell anyone. Before you tell your mother."
"Yes."
"Before you do anything."
"Yes."
I had never in my life agreed to something that fast.
Gemma's apartment was over a shoe repair shop on Ninth Street, three flights up, and in ten years I had been inside it twice.
The door stood open an inch.
I pushed it with my foot, and my hand was on my gun, and nobody shot me.
The place was bare and clean as a barracks.
One bed, one chair, a kitchen with a single cup on the draining board.
The cardboard box from my hallway sat in the middle of the mattress, with the brass key and its red thread laid on top.
She wasn't running.
She had left the door open the way a person leaves it for somebody she's expecting.
The closet door was open too.
Inside, pinned to the back wall with thumbtacks, was a map of the Amalfi coast road.
The third curve above the tunnel was circled in red pen.
Beside it someone had written a time, eleven forty, and below that, a line of small neat handwriting.
I knew the handwriting.
The sevens were crossed, and every y ended in a hook.
