Chapter 12: Flea Collar
"It itches," I said.
I was sitting on Rolando’s kitchen counter, the same dark wooden plank, with my graduation gown draped over the back of a chair and my legs dangling.
It was eleven at night.
Outside, my graduation party was still going at my mom’s house, with guinea pig, beer, and cumbia music you could hear all the way to the plaza.
I’d snuck away for half an hour, using the excuse that I was going to get some ice.
Rolando, standing by the sink, turned around slowly.
He’d loosened his tie.
His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, and he had that look of a man trying not to smile.
"Another flea?"
"Who knows."
"The dog’s got a new flea collar."
"It’s not the dog’s fault."
He came closer.
He stopped between my knees.
He put his hands on my hips.
"Tell me where it itches, good girl."
"Here."
I guided his hand to my thigh.
Then higher.
Rolando took a deep breath.
"You’ve been doing this to me for a week."
"And you never get tired of it."
"I don’t get tired. You drive me crazy."
