Chapter 8: Maribel
"Inside," my mom said. "Both of you."
She didn't shout.
That was the worst part.
Rolando climbed out of the truck with his shirt half-buttoned and his face pale.
The neighbors on the block peeked out their windows with the discretion of people who are watching on purpose.
My mom opened the door of our house wide.
We went into the living room—the one with the alpaca weavings, the portraits of my dad, the flowered sofa.
She stood by the table, the printed sheet in her hand.
It was the photo of Jairo.
She set it on the table, face up, and smoothed it with her palm.
"Tell me it's a lie."
Rolando opened his mouth.
I stepped forward.
"It's not a lie, Mom."
Maribel closed her eyes.
"Ariadna."
"It's true. We're together."
"Together?"
"For a few days now."
"A few days?"
"Since Wednesday. The flea market."
My mom let out a nervous laugh, the kind you laugh so you don't cry.
