Chapter 12: Breakfast
I woke up on Saturday with the sun in my face and the weight of a head on my arm.
The bed was mine.
The one in the master bedroom, the one I hadn't shared with anyone in three years.
Genesis was sleeping on her side, her hair a mess, her mouth slightly open, one leg tangled between mine.
She breathed slowly.
There was a red mark on her shoulder where I'd bitten her, and another lower down, on her hip.
I watched her for a long time.
Birds were singing on the balcony.
The smell of someone frying onions drifted up from downstairs.
An ordinary Saturday.
For her and me, it was the first one that really felt real.
I slipped out of bed without waking her.
I put water on for coffee.
I took arepas out of the freezer.
I grated cheese.
I opened the kitchen window, and the warm air of Valencia drifted in.
When I turned around, she was in the doorway, wearing my T-shirt, her hair tied up in a crooked bun.
"Good morning, Professor," she said.
"Good morning, student."
"Smells good."
"It's arepas."
"No. It smells like home."
I stood still, the grater in my hand.
