Chapter 7: Doña Eusebia
Doña Eusebia didn’t scream.
She lifted the candle a little higher, looked at us one by one, and said in a low, steady voice, “Get dressed. I’ll be waiting outside.”
She closed the door.
Anselmo went pale, clutching the sheet to his chest.
“She’s going to kill me,” he whispered.
“She’s not going to kill you,” Leandro said, searching for his glasses. “But I’d better get out there first.”
“I’ll go,” I said.
I put on my nightgown and tied my braids back, then crossed the courtyard barefoot to the veranda.
My mother-in-law was sitting on the wooden bench, her shawl closed around her neck and the candle resting on the floor.
She pointed to the spot beside her.
I sat down.
The night smelled of wet coffee and firewood.
A long while passed, with only the crickets for company.
“I was twenty-two when I married Anselmo’s father,” she began.
I looked at her, surprised.
She never talked about her youth.
“He was a good, hardworking man, and my body burned just like yours. One day my mother-in-law found me with my hand under my skirt behind the chicken coop.”
She rubbed her hands slowly, as if washing them.
“They locked me in the back room for forty days. The priest prayed over me. A healer gave me a bitter little tea that made me throw up. They called me sick until I believed it.”
“Doña Eusebia.”
“One night, my husband got me out through the window with a blanket. He said if I was sick, then he was too.” She wiped the corner of her eye with her shawl. “But he never told me he loved me in any other way, and I never knew how to ask him. He died young, and I was left with the fire and nowhere to put it.”
I felt a lump in my throat.
“I saw how those two looked at you,” she said, nodding toward the house. “They didn’t look at you like you were sick. They looked at you like a woman.”
