Chapter 13: Her Answer
"No," I said.
The word sat in the cab.
"Not one. I never saw a single letter, and nobody told me they existed."
"Your chief of staff."
"Leigh opened my mail for four years. She told me the complaint line was empty, and I believed her."
He watched the dash clock turn over.
"This morning I read one paragraph of letter twelve over your shoulder," I said. "That is everything of yours I have ever read."
His hands stayed open on his thighs.
"Then say the rest," Reuben said. "What you owe, and what you'll do about it."
I had no speech for this.
I had only the truck and the clock and a man I had lied to with my whole body.
"Two years of letters," I said. "Thirty-one people with your name on their slips and mine behind it. I had a chief of staff and I didn't read my own mail. That belongs to me, not to her."
"And me?"
"I'm the owner and you're my head of security. I let you touch me and I let you think I was a janitor. I don't get to call that anything but what it was."
"Say what it was."
"I took you to bed without telling you who I was."
He said nothing for a long moment.
"I'm not going to tell you I'd have said no," he said at last. "That's what makes me angry."
My breath caught.
"You can fire me," he said. "You can walk me out of this truck with a severance and a letter. That's your right. I'm saying it so we both hear it."
"I won't."
"I know you won't. I'm still saying it."
"Then say your terms."
