Chapter 24: What He Chose
"It's dead," Reuben said, and set the badge in my palm. "Finnegan's cousin killed it at three on Saturday morning."
"I can have a new one printed in ten minutes."
"I know. I want to say something first."
Six hundred guests were still on their feet behind us, talking in low, shaken voices.
I didn't hear a word of it.
"You have a job for me," he said. "The sergeant told me. Director of security for the whole company, an office on forty-one, a car, and a salary I'd be embarrassed to say."
"Yes."
"No."
He said it gently.
I closed my fingers around the badge.
"I told you in the truck that I keep my job until I quit it," Reuben said. "I'm not quitting. I'm taking it back, and I'll tell you the terms."
"I'm listening."
"The night floor. Ground level, six o'clock to six, my team back on the doors, the sergeant on days. No office on forty-one. I don't want a desk near yours."
"Why not?"
"Because I want to be the one who walks up and asks you what you're doing down here." The corner of his mouth lifted. "And because someone has to be on the floor when the next Finnegan arrives."
My eyes stung.
"Anything else?"
"Page nine goes on the break room wall, in Dot's handwriting. Dot gets a chair when you sit with your lawyers. And the dock door opens for anyone who shows up with bread."
"Done," I said. "All of it."
"You didn't argue."
"I want you where you want to be."
He looked at me for a long moment, in a ballroom full of people, with his badge in my hand.
Then he took my face in both palms and kissed me in front of all of them.
It was a slow, deliberate kiss, with nothing hidden in it.
