Chapter 16: Two Nights on Ward Four

The emergency room in La Crosse took my temperature and stopped being polite.

It was a hundred and three.

The doctor on call had the tired kind eyes of someone who had seen my chart before she saw my face.

"The steroid taper has turned your immune system down," she said. "You have a chest infection. We're admitting you."

"For how long?"

"Two nights, probably. Antibiotics through a line, and we watch your oxygen."

I looked at the ceiling tiles.

"I was supposed to start living a normal life this week," I said.

"You will," said Roe from the corner. "Just not today."

He had not left my side since the truck.

He had carried me from the parking lot to the desk, because I had asked him to, and no one in the building had blinked.

They put me on Ward Four, in a room with a window onto the parking structure.

A nurse hung a bag on a pole and taped a needle into the back of my hand.

It stung.

Then it was cold, running up the vein.

By evening my fever had broken into a shaky sweat, and I could hold a cup of ice chips.

Roe sat in the vinyl chair by the bed with his boots on the rail.

He had a yellow notepad on his knee, the one he used for my flare signs, and he was writing in it.
