Chapter 24: The Long Life
I lay a minute with my eyes closed and listened.
Bacon spat in a pan.
A kettle ticked.
Somebody ran water in the sink.
"No, he can't have it before you," said my mother's voice. "Elke eats first. She'll be up soon."
"I know how to make an egg, Birgit."
"I'm sure you do. I'm saying I'll watch."
Roe's low laugh answered her.
I put a hand over my face.
I wasn't angry.
I was happier than I knew how to say.
My body checked in, one part at a time, the way it did each morning.
Thighs heavy.
Hands stiff.
A dull ache across the shoulders from last night, which was the good kind.
Not a flare.
Not a good day, either.
A middling day, a gray-sweater day.
That was the whole truth, and I was learning to like it.
The cane stood against the wall where I'd left it.
Beside it, on the floor, sat my slippers, set so I could step into them.
Roe came in with a tray.
He wore a clean flannel and his hair stuck up in back.
