I dressed Lucan's hand at the clinic at three in the morning.
He sat on the exam table with his bad arm laid across my lap, and he did not make a sound.
The skin had gone the color of a plum from the fingertips to the wrist.
I pressed a nail and watched the white not come back.
"Little finger and ring finger will go," I said. "Maybe the middle one."
"Will I use it?"
"If you let a surgeon in Ely do it today."
"After the hall."
"After the hall, you could lose the hand."
"After the hall," he said again.
I wrapped it in gauze, because he would not move, and because it was my job.
He watched my fingers the whole time.
"You didn't have to throw the rope," he said.
"I know."
"Why did you?"
"Because I wanted her to be alive when they judged her."
He nodded.
I tied the last knot a little too tight.
