"Why?" I asked.

"Because I've stood on her side of every stage for two years." Marit looked down at her son. "I'd like to know what the other side looks like before he's old enough to ask me about it."

"She'll be there. Ten feet away. On live TV."

"I know."

"You don't have to do anything, Marit. You can just sit."

"I know that too," she said. "Say yes."

I said yes.

The auditorium at the old high school held eight hundred people.

On October 14 it held eight hundred and the fire marshal pretended not to count.
