Chapter 6: Three

I took the chain off and stepped out onto the porch.

I wasn't letting him into Jens's house.

The cold bit through the sweatshirt right away.

"Who else's would it be?" I said.

"I don't know. The guy with the plow?"

"I met the guy with the plow on Friday. In the ditch you drove past."

He flinched.

He actually flinched.

"I didn't know you were pregnant."

"You didn't ask. You rolled the window up."

"Marit was cramping."

"Marit had a false alarm and a warm car. I had eleven percent battery and a foot of snow in my boots."

He looked down at the bill in his hand.

He folded it in half, then in half again.

"How far?"

"Ten weeks. Almost eleven."

He calculated the months. I watched him do it.

November. The weekend his mother was in St. Paul and he was sweet for two whole days.

"So it's mine."

"They're yours," I said.

The word took a second to land.

"They?"

"Three, Anders."

He stared at me.

Then he laughed, a short, stunned bark, and put his hand over his mouth.

Across the street, a porch light came on.

An older man in a parka came out with a shovel he didn't need and started very slowly clearing two steps.

"Three," Anders said. "Three. Oh my God."

I thought, for one stupid second, that he was going to cry.

That he was going to say he was sorry.

Instead I watched his eyes go somewhere else.

I'd seen that look over spreadsheets.

"Signe. Listen to me. Listen. The divorce isn't final."

"I signed it."

"You signed it. It's not filed. It takes sixty days." He stepped closer. "Grandpa's trust releases to me on the birth of a legitimate heir. A legitimate heir. Do you understand what that means?"

"I understand what it means."

"Three legitimate heirs. Mine. Born in wedlock." He was almost laughing again. "Marit's baby doesn't matter. Mom doesn't have to pretend anymore. We just stay married until they're born. That's all. Six months. Seven."
