Chapter 15: Posted

The video went up at 6:50 on Tuesday morning, and by the first bell everyone in the building had seen it.

I found out because Pia was waiting at the front doors with her phone held out.

"Don't," she said. "Wait. Watch it once, and then decide how to feel."

It was me on a cafeteria table, in my cardigan, with my eyes shut.

I was singing the Ridgeline school song, off key, to a room full of people holding up their phones.

Somebody had cut it so that my voice cracked twice and the cheering was louder than the words.

The caption said: Our class president, ladies and gentlemen. She'll make you do anything to get what she wants. Seven days of rules, and she broke the one game that made our senior year fun.

Under it Dane had written: Hope Cromwell is watching.

"He tagged them," Pia said. "The Cromwell scholars' account. He tagged the actual account."

"Okay."

"That's all? Okay?"

"I'm taking it in."

I walked through the lobby, and people looked at me and then at their screens.

A boy near the trophy case sang the first line of the school song in a high voice, and three of his friends laughed.

Someone had stuck a note on my locker.

It said: PRESIDENT OF EVERYTHING.

Another said: Check your phone, Selah! Oh wait.

I peeled them off one at a time and folded them into my pocket.
