Chapter 21: The Button
"Then I'm coming," I said.
"You can't."
"It's about me. I'm coming."
"Jemma, nobody's wife has ever walked into that room. Not my mother. Not Gennaro's."
"I'm not anybody's wife."
He looked at me in his black shirt, with my bare feet on his cold floor.
"No," he said. "You're not."
On Wednesday night Cosima closed the restaurant at nine.
The table sat in the back room, behind the kitchen, through a door with a frosted glass window.
I'd never been back there.
Cosima had never been back there either, and she'd run the place for six years.
"I bring the coffee to the door," she said. "I knock. A hand comes out and takes it."
The men came in one at a time, through the kitchen.
Older men, mostly, in good coats, nodding to Cosima, not looking at me at all.
I sat on a milk crate by the back-room door with my sewing kit in my lap.
Dom was already inside.
Gennaro went past me without stopping.
He touched his cross, smiled, and said, "Kid," as if I were a cat on a step.
