Chapter 29: The Feast

I went after him.

I went through the side door and across the bright service hall in my sneakers.

Behind me I heard the gold chairs scraping, a whole ballroom getting up at once.

The feast hall was long and warm and smelled like garlic and candles.

A hundred men sat down both sides of a white table with their jackets off.

At the far end, on an easel, stood a big photo of Matty blowing out his candles in the Mets cap.

Dom sat at the head of the table under it.

The old capo sat at his right hand, with his cane hooked on the chair.

Gennaro had stopped halfway up the room.

"Family," he said. "You'll hear things tonight. A girl across the hall in a stolen dress just told my wife a story."

He laughed. "The kid's seamstress wrote it for her. You all know she reads to reporters."

A few men laughed with him.

Then the wives started coming in through the doors behind me.

They stood along the back wall in their good dresses, and their husbands saw them, and the laughing stopped.

The ladies from Thursday came in behind them, and Cosima, and Gran in dove-gray silk on Cosima's arm.
