Chapter 22: The Sand

The crowd saw him before the giant did.

A hush ran across the bleachers, thinning, spreading, until six hundred people were looking at one man walking over sand.

He moved slowly. His left hand shook at his side, and he didn't hide it.

The masked giant stopped, confused. He looked up at the balcony.

"Stand where you are," I said to Valentin, not turning my head.

"I'm not here to take your fight."

"Then why are you here?"

"To tell them something."

He stopped just short of the end of my chain, three feet off, and turned to face the stands.

The announcer in the red jacket still held his microphone, white-knuckled.

Valentin held out a hand for it.

The man gave it to him.

"Good evening," Valentin said.

His voice was thin, and it carried.

"Some of you came here tonight to watch a woman die. I want to tell you what you've bought."

"Shoot him," Calvin said from the balcony. He was no longer pleasant. "Somebody shoot him."

Nobody did.

"Pier Nine's books went to the federal court at nine this morning," Valentin said. "Every ticket sold for two years. Every name, every date, every body. My driver carried them there himself."
