Chapter 19: The Doctor's Envelope
Chadwick came to my parents' door on Tuesday evening with an envelope, and he did not hand it to me.
He handed it to my father.
Chester McDonough stood in the front hall in his flannel shirt, holding it away from his body.
"What's this?"
"Open it, sir."
"Why me?"
"Because I'd like the man who gave me his daughter to read it first," said Chadwick. "Before she does. Before my lawyers."
My father looked at me.
I stood on the stairs with my arms crossed and said nothing.
He tore the flap with one thumb and pulled out two pages.
The top one was on the letterhead of an urgent care clinic in Chicago.
The time in the corner said 1:48 a.m., on the night of the hotel.
"Blood panel," my father read, slowly. "Patient presented alone, complaining of racing heart and nausea. Sedative compound not prescribed to the patient detected. Alcohol present, low."
He looked up.
"You walked yourself to a clinic in the middle of the night."
"I took a cab."
"With her still in your room?"
"I'd put her out in the corridor by then. I locked the door and went down to the lobby. I didn't want to be in the suite."
"And you kept this."
"I asked the doctor for a copy. I didn't know what for." Chadwick's voice was very level. "Then she sent me a picture of a pregnancy test, and I knew."
My father read the second page.
It was the clinic's discharge slip, with a time stamp from the front desk and a name on the signature line.
