Chapter 23: One Night Without Limits
On Monday night I did not knock.
I opened the study door and walked in.
Chadwick was sitting on the leather couch in his undershirt with a laptop on his knees and a cold cup of tea on the arm.
The bruise on his jaw had gone yellow at the edges.
He looked up, and he shut the laptop without being told.
"It's been one day," he said. "I counted."
"I know."
"Thirty days, you said."
"I said a lot of things." I stood in front of him with my robe tied at the waist. "I'm cutting it short."
He did not move.
"Why?"
"Because I watched you take my father's fist and say thank you," I said. "And because last night you were asked what you wanted, and you said nothing, and you meant it."
"I did mean it."
"I know. That's why."
I took the laptop off his knees and set it on the floor.
Then I put one knee on the couch on either side of his hips and sat down in his lap.
His hands came up and stopped in the air, an inch from my waist.
"Say what you want," I said. "Tonight there are no terms."
He looked at me with those dark deep-set eyes.
"I love you," said Chadwick.
It came out plain and rough, with nothing around it.
"I loved you at nineteen, and I loved you the day you walked out of my office smiling."
"I'll love you after you've sent me back to the couch for good. I don't need you to say anything."
"I love you too," I said.
His whole face broke open.
I kissed him.
It was slow at first, and then not slow.
His hands found my waist, and I untied the robe and let it fall.
I wore nothing under it.
"Eileen," he said, against my mouth, like it hurt.
