Chapter 4: Served

The process server came on Monday at four, in the middle of my Learn to Skate class.

I had twelve kids on the ice between four and seven years old, all of them in helmets and mittens, all of them falling down in the same direction.

A man in a gray raincoat stood at the boards with an envelope.

He did not look at the kids.

"Hanna Ostrowski?"

"I'm teaching."

"I need you to take this, ma'am."

I skated over because the alternative was shouting across a rink full of children.

He held out the envelope.

"You are served."

A mother near the glass lifted her phone.

Then another mother did, and a father with a baby on his shoulder.

I tore the envelope open standing on the ice with my blades chewing the edge of the boards.

Calder Media Group, plaintiff. Hanna Ostrowski, defendant.

Breach of the content partnership agreement, four hundred thousand dollars, and an order to take down the video on hannaonice by Wednesday.

"Miss Hanna," a small voice said by my knee. "Are you in trouble?"

It was the girl who had asked about the lady at open skate.

"A little," I said. "Go see if you can skate to the red line."

I made it to the end of the class.

I smiled until the last mitten was off, and then I went into the skate shop's back room and sat on a crate of laces with the lawsuit shaking in my hands.

"You didn't cry in front of the babies," my grandmother said from the doorway. "Good girl. Now cry."

I did, for about a minute and a half.
