Chapter 6: The Gala

I walked across the ballroom on three hundred people's attention.

I had never been looked at like that in person.

On a screen, strangers were kind. In a room, they were quiet.

Cassidy saw me coming and lifted her glass an inch.

"Hanna. You came. I'm so glad."

"That's my ring."

She looked down at her hand.

"Brady asked me to wear it tonight," she said, soft and reasonable. "The sponsors expect to see it. It's only until the playoffs."

"I put it in his hand in front of two hundred thousand people."

"And he's holding it for you."

"On your finger."

A man beside her, silver-haired, with a sponsor's pin on his lapel, glanced from her face to mine.

I turned to him.

"I'm Hanna Ostrowski," I said. "I'm the woman from the video."

"I know who you are," he said carefully.

"This woman was my best friend for fifteen years. On Friday night I found her with my fiancé in an equipment room. This ring was mine. He proposed with it in front of this team's cameras, and I think now it was to sell a channel."

Cassidy's smile stayed in place, but it thinned.

"Han, you're upset."

"I'm not upset, Cass. I'm explaining."

I held out my hand, palm up.

"Give it back."

"Hanna, don't make a scene."

"Give her the ring, Cassidy," said a voice from behind me.

It was Soren.

He had come out of his column and stood at my shoulder, not touching me, big and dark in the chandelier light.
