Chapter 8: August

I could not sleep, so at two in the morning I went down to the rink.

Dorota kept the lights on a timer.

The big overheads went dark at eleven, and only the green exit signs and the blue neon skate in the window were left.

I laced up in the dark, stepped onto fresh ice and skated hard until my legs burned.

It was the only thing that had ever shut my head off.

I had skated six laps when I heard the lobby door.

A man's skates scraped the rubber matting, and then came onto the ice.

I knew who it was before he reached the boards.

Soren Lund skated lightly for such a big man. He came across the rink in long easy strokes and stopped a few feet from me with a spray of shaved ice.

"Your grandmother left the side door open," he said.

"She did that on purpose."

"I think she did."

"August," I said.

He nodded.

I skated up until I was close enough to see the crooked line of his nose.

"You knew for two months, and all of that time I was on camera," I said. "I filmed a Labor Day barbecue with her in it. I filmed the two of us picking pumpkins. She stood behind me with the phone and said, 'Smile, babe.' And you knew."

"Yes."

"You walked out of the room when I filmed. I thought you looked down on me."

"I didn't."

"You watched me smile, Soren. You watched me smile every Tuesday for two months."

"I told Brady to end it or tell you."

"And he said what?"
