Chapter 13: Thirty-Six Months
I held the phone in front of his face.
The truck was dark and warm, and the notification glowed between us.
"Explain this," I said.
Axel looked at the screen.
All the color left his face.
"Kaisa."
"Lakehead Holdings. Rent received, Skogen Arena." My voice came out flat. "Explain it."
"Inside," he said. "Please. I'll show you everything."
"Show me now."
"It's twelve degrees and you don't have shoes on."
"Neither do you."
He almost laughed, and it died halfway out.
We went in through the garage, barefoot on freezing concrete.
He led me upstairs to a room I hadn't seen.
It was a small office at the end of the hall, with a desk, a laptop and one window.
He opened the laptop and typed a password.
His hands were shaking.
He turned the screen toward me.
It was a bank page with one account on it.
The title read: Skogen Arena Reserve, in the name of my father.
Under it was a balance.
$111,600.
I read it three times.
"Thirty-six deposits," he said quietly. "Thirty-one hundred each. One every month for three years."
"That's my rent."
"Yes."
"I pay that to Lakehead Holdings."
"Lakehead Holdings is me."
The room tilted.
I sat down on the edge of the desk because my legs wouldn't hold.
"Three years ago, the bank sold the loan on the building," he said. "A developer in Minneapolis bought it. He planned to knock the rink down and build apartments."
