Chapter 21: On the Record
The owner's suite was at the top of the arena, with a wall of glass over the ice.
We came in with our hair still wet and our clothes buttoned wrong.
Nobody mentioned it.
The owner was a tiny woman of seventy in a green wool suit.
She sat at the head of a long table with a cane across her knees.
A man from the league network sat at her right with a notebook open.
Gordon Ketterman stood at the window with his drink.
"Captain," the owner said. "Ms. Lindqvist. Sit."
We sat.
Axel's leg pressed against mine under the table.
"That was the best hockey I've seen in eleven years," she said. "Mr. Ketterman tells me you're a miracle, Ms. Lindqvist."
"I'm a coach."
"He also tells me," the owner went on, in the same mild voice, "that you've agreed to file a report on the captain's knee."
My stomach dropped.
Ketterman turned from the window, with the smile.
"The report is a formality," he said. "A frank, professional assessment. For the league."
"A frank, professional assessment that Mr. Dahl is finished."
"That the knee cannot hold up long-term. Yes."
"Did you tell her that, Ms. Lindqvist?"
"No," I said.
"She hasn't signed it yet." Ketterman smiled at the room. "But she will, I think. She's a sensible woman. She needs the money."
"Gordon," the owner said. "Sit down."
"I'm quite comfortable."
"Sit down."
He sat.
I took my phone out of my pocket and laid it flat on the polished table.
"I'd like to play something," I said.
"Ms. Lindqvist."
"It's twelve minutes long. The last forty seconds are the part you want."
I pressed play.
His voice filled the suite.
