Chapter 21: The Bargain

I read every page, as I always do.

The lawyer waited with a pen in his hand and a patient face while forty dancers watched from the floor.

It was three pages long.

On the first, I resigned the role of Giselle and the soloist contract on page ten, with no claim and no compensation.

On the second, Meridian Ballet's chairman, as the injured party, withdrew his complaints of burglary and assault against Alec Kerrigan.

He would also sign a letter to the court that he did not oppose bail.

The third page was the one meant to hurt.

I would sign a promise to speak to nobody about the Marlowe, the boxes, or my father.

"Not that one," I said.

"It's the whole purpose."

"I'll give him the role. I won't give him my father."

The lawyer sighed.

"Mr. Ashworth said you might."

He took the page back, crossed out the paragraph with a single line, and initialed the margin.

I stared at him.

"He said that if you reached it, I could remove it."

"Because it would make no difference."

"Because he believes no one in the building will believe you now."

He was wrong, and I could have told him so.

I did not.

I took the pen and signed the first page, and the second.

My name looked small again on that thick paper.

It was the smallest I had ever written it.
