Chapter 10: Three Years

Elliot came out of the office and stood next to me on the gravel and said nothing for a long time.

Then he opened the truck door.

"Sit," he said. "You're blue."

I sat.

He got in on his side and turned the heat on high and the dashboard glowed.

The windshield was fogging over with both our breath.

"What did he want?" Elliot asked.

"Vows."

"His vows."

"To Lacey. He wants me to write them." I stared at the heater vent. "And he wants me in his guest room after the wire."

Elliot's hand tightened on the wheel until the leather creaked.

"That's all he said?"

"That's all." I turned in the seat. "Can I ask you something?"

"Anything."

"Why didn't you ever call me back?"

He didn't answer.

"I'm asking because I need to know," I said. "I left you a message every Sunday. Every Sunday, Elliot. Three years. You listened to every one and you never picked up a phone once."

"I know."

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true, and I don't have anything better."

"Try," I said.

My voice broke on the word, and I hated it.

"I carried your brother for three years," I said. "I carried your mother's house for three years. I bathed him when the aide quit. I slept in a chair. I called you because I thought, there has to be one person in this family I can say it to. And you were out there with a phone in your pocket and you just let it ring."

"Margot."

"Do you know what that was like?"

"No," he said.
