Chapter 18: Father's Son

Dag stepped into the lounge and shut the door behind him.

"Your phone went dark at eleven," he said to Nils. "It never goes dark. So I knew where to look."

He took his gloves off, one finger at a time.

He laid them on the arm of the couch.

He didn't look at me at all.

"Sit down, son."

Nils was still standing, holding on to the couch.

"No."

"Sit down before you fall down."

Nils sat.

I hated him for it.

I hated how fast his body did it, before his face had decided.

"Now," Dag said. "Tell me what you're going to tell the sheriff."

"The truth."

"Which is what?"

"That I was driving. That you moved her."

Dag nodded slowly.

"Criminal vehicular operation," he said. "Great bodily harm. Your brother's skull. Three people in the truck. A pregnant girl in the back. And then seven years of lying to deputies, to a court, to every listener in the state."

He counted it off on his fingers.

"That's prison, Nils. Real prison. Not a weekend. Four years, maybe more. They'll put a man with one leg in Stillwater and see what happens."

Nils's jaw was shaking.
