Erik let go of the doorframe and picked up the doctor.

All the way off the floor.

She was a tall woman in her fifties with reading glasses and no patience for anything, and he lifted her in the air outside room 614.

"Put me down, Mr. Haugland."

"Sorry. Sorry."

He put her down.

He didn't look sorry.

She straightened her coat.

Her mouth was twitching.

"Twice as many tomorrow, if we're lucky," she said. "Then twice that. She's making her own blood now. Your blood. Go tell her."

We went in together.

Ingrid was sitting up eating dry cereal out of the box, one piece at a time.

She looked at our faces.

"What?"

"Your new blood's working, bug," Erik said.

She considered this.

"Daddy Juice?"

"Daddy Juice."

She put down the cereal box.

"Can I go in the hall now?"

The doctor said four more days.

Ingrid said that was a lie, and four days was forever.

It was four days.

On the fifth morning, the nurse unhooked her from everything but one line and said she could walk one lap of the floor in a mask.
