Chapter 25: Home
Erik crouched down on the porch until his eyes were level with hers.
"It's your house," he said. "Not a visiting house. Your house."
Ingrid narrowed her eyes.
"For how long?"
"Until you're old and bossy and you move out and make me cry."
"I'm already bossy."
"Then until you're old."
She thought about it.
"Okay," she said, and walked in like she owned it.
She did a full tour in her boots.
The kitchen.
The living room with the big windows and the fireplace.
The stairs, one at a time, with Erik a step behind her in case.
At the top, she stopped at the room with the window seat.
My room.
She opened the closet and found the hockey net.
She turned around slowly, holding the door.
"Is this a kid's room?"
Erik leaned against the doorframe.
"I bought that net the first winter I lived here," he said. "For a kid's room. Someday."
"Is it my room?"
He looked at me.
I looked at the window seat where I'd sat in the dark the night I stopped him in the kitchen.
"It's your room, bug," I said.
Ingrid frowned.
"Then where do you sleep?"
Jodie, coming up the stairs behind us with two garbage bags, made a noise.
Erik went red to his ears.
"Mommy can sleep wherever she wants," he said carefully.
Ingrid looked at the door across the hall.
The big bedroom.
His.
"Mommy sleeps in Daddy's room," she announced. "That's how houses go."
Jodie dropped both garbage bags and had to sit down on the stairs.
That night we ate dinner at the kitchen table, all four of us.
The first time.
Erik made grilled cheese, because Ingrid asked.
He burned one.
"That's Daddy's," Ingrid said. "Daddy eats the burned ones. That's a rule."
"Since when?"
"Since now. I'm making rules."
