Chapter 13: Whose Fault
I didn't let go of her.
The light went out of the sky, and the boards under us gave off the day's last warmth.
"Say it," Greer said into my shirt. "Say what you've been holding against me. I would."
"I haven't been holding anything."
"Asa."
"I mean it."
She sat back on her heels and looked at me.
Her face was wet now, and she didn't wipe it.
"You stood over my bed and said it was your fault," she said. "You said it so I'd never have to hear that it was mine. You decided I couldn't take the truth, and you carried it alone for two years."
"I didn't know it was the truth."
"You didn't ask."
"No."
"Nine times I swung at you, and you never once said, Greer, tell me what happened that night."
That one landed.
I felt it land.
"You're right," I said. "I should have asked."
"You were afraid of the answer."
"I was afraid you'd fall apart in front of me, and I'd have made it worse."
She laughed, one hard breath through her nose.
"And now?"
"Now you've told me, and you're still here on the boards. And I'd like to know what you want me to say."
"I want you to say you blame me."
"I don't."
"Say it anyway. Get it over with."
"Greer." I took her face in my left hand, and she let me. "I came back from the car and the meadow was empty. I stood there shouting his name, and the whole time I thought: I should have taken him with me. I should have kept him by my leg. I never once thought it was yours."
