Chapter 16: Darren Presents
On day sixty, Darren launched my broken hand on the steps of the town hall.
He had a podium, a banner twelve feet wide, and a string quartet.
THE NINTH HAND, the banner said, in gold letters, and under it, in smaller ones, A Teller Gallery Event.
For ten days I had carried the new line from my lock screen around the lake house like a stone in my pocket.
SHE IS NOT FORGETTING THIS TIME.
I still didn't know whether it meant she was acting, or that she meant every cruel word she'd say to me today.
He'd had a card delivered to the lake house, cream stock, my name in his looping hand.
You are the guest of honor. Please come. M.
June drove me, and parked half a block away, and said, "If you hit him I'll bail you out."
"I'm not going to hit him."
"I might."
The square was full.
There were three news vans, a dozen phones on tripods, and every collector who had bought a Broken Hand print.
I stood at the back with my cast in a sling.
I had put on a clean shirt.
At ten sharp Darren came out of the town hall doors with Greer on his arm.
She wore the gray dress, with her hair pinned up and her chin level.
She did not look at the crowd.
She looked straight at me, across thirty yards of upturned faces, and then she looked away.
"Ladies and gentlemen." Darren's voice carried without a microphone. "Friends. For eight years I have had the honor of representing the finest painter this town has produced."
