Chapter 12: Out
He was sitting on the front step when Celia dropped me at Pell Street.
I walked past him, unlocked the green door and left it open behind me.
That was all the invitation he got.
He came into the kitchen and stopped at the doorway, as far from the table as the room allowed.
I stood at the sink with my back to the window and my arms folded.
"You said anything I asked, you'd answer," I said.
"Yes."
"Did you give the order that sent me abroad?"
"Yes."
"Did you know what Brightwater was when you gave it?"
"No. I thought it was a school. I thought a year, maybe two, and a letter home." His voice was level and very tired. "I didn't ask. That's mine too."
"When did you find out?"
"Nine months ago. Your brother called me."
"Finbar told you."
"Finbar told me. I sent lawyers and a doctor the next day, and I told the director I would take his licence if he didn't open the door."
"And he did."
"Six weeks later."
I looked at the floor.
The tiles were black and white, laid in the old pattern, and I stared at them to keep from shouting.
"And you let me come home," I said, "and you let me think you were the thing I ran from."
"Yes."
"For two weeks."
"Yes."
"You let me be sick on a landing in front of strangers and you stood there and took it. You let Marguerite say it to my face. You let me sleep with you."
"I didn't let you do anything," he said, very quietly. "You decided. I stopped you once, and you told me what to do instead."
