Chapter 14: The Study

Marguerite chaired the Chamber of Commerce lunch every Thursday, and she never left it before three.

Edwin told us that on the phone, and then he gave Finbar the alarm code and said he would be at the lawyer's office, signing something he should have signed years ago.

At one o'clock Finbar and I walked into the house I had grown up in.

It smelled of lilies and furniture polish.

Nothing in it had changed except me.

"The study," Finbar said. "She keeps it locked, but the key is in the clock in the hall. She thinks nobody knows."

"How do you know?"

"I was ten when I found it. She was never as clever as she thought."

The study was a long room with a green desk and a window onto the garden.

On the shelf behind the desk stood a row of grey binders with months written on the spines.

I took down the one marked with the spring I left.

Inside, each week had its own typed page.

At the top of every page was the same heading.

H. and G.E.

Under it were the places, the times and the driver's name.

In the margin, in the neat blue hand I knew from my calendars, Marguerite had written her notes.

Ellsworth credit line up for review Friday, so keep H. in his sight at lunch.

I read that last note three times.
