Chapter 19: The Vote
The annual meeting of Corrigan Freight was held on the twenty-eighth in the same long room on the ninth floor.
I sat in my mother's chair.
It had been empty for fifteen years, at the right hand of the chair at the head of the table, and nobody in the firm had ever moved it.
Finbar sat on my left with a folder, and Edwin on my right with his hands folded on the wood.
Padraig stood at the back with a cup of coffee he did not drink.
Marguerite came in last.
She wore navy this time, not cream, and nobody applauded.
She took the head of the table and laid a single sheet in front of her.
"We will begin with the accounts," she said. "Then the usual items."
"We'll begin with item nine," I said.
She looked at me.
"Item nine is the election of the chair," Finbar read from the agenda. "Hazel has put a motion on it."
"Hazel is not entitled to put a motion."
"The trust released my shares to me on Friday," I said. "I'm twenty-five. The doctor's letter was withdrawn on Monday, and the clinic's director has resigned, and you can read both in this folder."
The man from the bank sat halfway down the table in a grey suit, with his tablet in front of him.
He had held the bank's twenty percent for ten years, and he had never once voted against Marguerite.
"Mrs. Corrigan," he said, not unkindly. "Our compliance officer read a newspaper on Sunday. Then she read a binder that Miss Corrigan's brother sent her on Sunday night."
