Chapter 14: The Courier
Pia found us on the granary steps an hour before dawn.
She had a ladle in one hand and her apron on inside out.
"There's a clerk saddling a horse," she said. "In the dark. Without a lamp."
Tobin stood up so fast he swore at his shoulder.
"Which clerk?"
"The thin one. One of the Chancellor's counters. Montalban took the other three south with him and left this one behind to count your barley."
"Barley that doesn't exist," Tobin said.
"That's what I thought," Pia said. "So I wrapped my shoes in sacking and followed him."
Corradin wiped the dried blood off his chin with the back of his hand.
"Show us," he said.
The stable yard was grey and silent.
A narrow man in a clerk's brown coat was tightening a girth strap with shaking fingers.
A leather satchel hung from his saddle horn, bulging at the seams.
He had tied cloth around the horse's hooves.
