Chapter 16: Wolves at the Gate
We rode the last three miles with the horn still sounding behind the ridge.
Smoke rose over Greywatch in a black column.
When the gate came in sight, the first thing I saw was a pot.
It hung over the wall on a chain, and it was tipping.
Boiling stew poured down onto the heads of twenty raiders who were trying to climb a ladder.
On the wall above it stood Pia with her sleeves rolled, bellowing orders at six cooks and a boy with rope on his boots.
"Again!" she screamed. "Pour it again! Don't waste the good barley!"
The raiders at the ladder fell back, howling.
Tobin laughed out loud, a cracked, disbelieving laugh, and drew his sword.
"For Greywatch!" he roared.
Thirty riders thundered behind him.
I slid from my saddle at the foot of the slope, dragged my bow off my back, and ran for the wall stair.
The raiders had come from the east side, in numbers.
Forty at least, in dirty leathers, with axes and ladders.
They hit the gate again and again while the garrison held it with shields and a cart wedged across the arch.
I took the stair two steps at a time and reached the wall beside Pia.
"You're back," she shouted.
"You're alive!"
"I've been busy! Shoot the one with the horn!"
