Chapter 10: What She Asked
The hall went quiet for Dane, because he was an Alpha, and a hundred wolves wanted to hear what he'd say.
"Our bond was never broken," he said again. "A mate who walks off the Stone in grief is still a mate. I was hasty."
"You rejected me in front of two hundred wolves," I said.
My voice shook, and I made it stop.
"I answered you in front of two hundred wolves. I said I accepted."
"In anger."
"In front of witnesses."
The old woman in the center chair rapped the gavel.
"Alpha Redfern," she said. "A rejection spoken on the Stone and accepted on the Stone is closed. The council has not reopened one in four hundred years."
"She is the Moon Wolf."
"Which is why no pack may claim her. Including yours."
Dane stood very still.
I watched his hands.
They opened and closed at his sides, and nothing was in them.
"Alpha Redfern leaves Highmoor by dusk," said Caelen, from beside me. "His petition is denied."
"Your Highness," Dane said, through his teeth.
"Dusk."
He went.
His Beta walked him out, a step behind, and his shoulders were not as wide as they had been at the gate.
The room dissolved into noise, and I stood on the moonglass until Caelen took my elbow and walked me out.
He didn't speak until the study door had closed behind us.
Then he said, "Ask me to stay."
"What?"
"I'm asking you to ask me."
"I'm not going to touch you unless you do, and I'm very tired of not touching you."
I laughed.
It came out wet and shaky, and I put my hand over my mouth.
"I'm the Moon Wolf," I said.
"You are."
"I'm Luna of the Crown by a law nobody has used in a thousand years, and you're promised to someone else."
