Chapter 14: Starved

Wynne's POV

Caelen was waiting for me in the study at dawn with a folded page on the desk and Maud in the chair by the window.

"Sit," he said. "Please."

I didn't sit.

"You smell like the road," I said. "Where were you?"

"Border Post Nine."

"Alone."

"Yes."

"You said you'd tell me first. You said it in this room."

"I know what I said." He didn't look away. "I went before I could think better of it. I should have woken you."

I wanted to be angrier at him than I was.

He pushed the page across the desk.

It was a statement in a heavy hand, signed twice, and I read it standing up.

Dane had written the report, or rather he'd dictated it.

His Beta had typed it and stamped it.

The page shook, and I realized it was my hand.

"He wanted me dead," I said.

"He wanted you silent," said Maud. "It's not the same. He needed you alive."

She took a biscuit out of her sleeve and broke it in half.

"Eat. You've gone grey."

"I don't want a biscuit."

"I didn't ask what you wanted. Eat, and then I'll tell you what he did to you."

I ate.

It tasted of ginger and nothing else.

"A mate bond runs both ways," Maud said. "Two wolves share a little strength, a little healing, a little warmth."

"Between ordinary wolves it's a trickle."

"Between you and a pack Alpha who wanted to be unbeatable, with the goddess's own power in your blood, it ran downhill like water."

"All it needed was a hand."

I looked down at my fingers.

"The luck," I said.

"Every time you held his palm, the gate opened. He drew on you for a minute, and you went cold, and he won."

"Six years."

"And my wolf?"
