Chapter 15: Vending Machine Dinner

Mickey stood in the doorway and looked at that open drawer.

It was none of his business.

He'd hung Kelli's shelves for four years and never once opened her mail.

He took one step into the study anyway.

His phone went off in his back pocket so loud he nearly hit the ceiling.

Mandy.

"Where are you?" she said. "Are you with him?"

"I'm at his place. He's not here."

"He's here. He's been here since eight." Her voice went up half an octave. "Mick. The Don moved."

"Moved how?"

"His hand. Santino was talking to him and he squeezed back. Twice. The doctors are all in there."

"Is he awake?"

"Not yet. But he's in there. Get down here."

Mickey left the drawer exactly how he'd found it.

He was in the car ten minutes later, with his curls still wet.

The eighth floor was full of people for once.

Two doctors and three nurses in the Don's glass room, checking machines, shining a light into his eyes.

Santino stood at the foot of the bed in his gloves and yesterday's white shirt.

He'd put the gloves back on.

Mickey had known he would.

It still did something to him, seeing them, after this morning.

Santino turned when Mickey came in.

His face did a thing Mickey had never seen it do in public.

It just opened.

"He squeezed my hand," Santino said.

"Mandy told me."

"Twice. I said 'Papa, it's me,' and he squeezed twice."

His voice cracked on the last word.

He didn't seem to care who heard.

Mickey walked over and stood next to him, close, his shoulder against Santino's arm.

The doctors talked over their heads for a while.

Responsive. Early. Promising. Don't expect too much.

Santino nodded at every word.

When the doctors finally left, he sat down hard in the chair by the bed and took his father's hand again.
