Mickey took the Orange Line home.
Nobody followed him that he could see, which meant nothing.
The two-flat was cold.
He turned the heat up.
He made coffee.
He sat at the kitchen table where he'd said "I think I like him" three days ago.
He didn't cry, because he had nothing left to cry with.
At noon Mandy came in the back door in her scrubs.
She'd heard from the driver, who'd heard from Santino, who apparently hadn't said much.
She looked at her brother.
She put the kettle on.
"Do you want me to hate him?" she said.
"I don't know yet."
"Okay. I'll stand by."
She made him grilled cheese with a tomato in the middle.
She didn't ask a single question.
That was how he knew she was worried.
At three he put on his coat.
"Where are you going?" she said.
"Work."
"The Forty-One's shut."
"I know."
He walked six blocks down Halsted in the wind.
Heffernan's sat on the corner where it had always sat, a red-brick tavern with a green door and a dead neon shamrock in the window.
