Chapter 8: Tip Sheet

Seven men looked at the receipt.

Then seven men looked at Mickey.

The fat capo whistled through his teeth.

"Digoxin," the capo with the cane said slowly. "That's what the doctors found in Primo."

"How do you know that?" Santino said.

"Everybody knows it."

Santino looked across the table at his cousin.

Nunzio looked back, smiling, and spread his hands.

"A friend at the drugstore," he said. "People talk to me."

Mickey's heart was going so hard he could feel it in his teeth.

Under the table, Santino's knee pressed against his.

Mickey picked up the receipt.

Last Tuesday. 9:40 p.m.

He closed his eyes.

"Tuesday," he said. "The Forty-One opened at five. I worked a double because the other bartender had the flu."

"So you say," Nunzio said.

"At 9:40 I was pouring a vodka tonic. Tito's, two limes, tall glass. It was your second one."

Mickey opened his eyes and looked at the young capo.

The young capo blinked.

"You came in with two guys from the trucks," Mickey said. "You sat at the corner of my bar."

"You told me your mother wanted you to get married, and you showed me a picture of a girl from church."

"I said she looked nice, and you said she looked like your aunt."

The fat capo snorted.

The young capo had gone red to the ears.

"That was Tuesday?"

"Tuesday. You signed your tab at 9:52 and tipped me twenty on a sixty-dollar check."

Mickey took out his phone.

For four years he'd photographed every night's tip sheet.

Every dollar on it went into the bar fund, and he'd liked watching the number grow.

He found Tuesday.

His handwriting. His signature at close. The young capo's tab number, with the time printed beside it.

He slid the phone across the green cloth.

The young capo looked at it a long time.
