The Ferrara club on Richmond Avenue had no windows, and for the first time it felt like a room with the lights on.
Nine chairs stood around the long oak table under Saint Michael.
Seven were filled by capos in dark suits, and the eighth, at the head, was empty.
I wore the leather jacket and the dark red lipstick, and a black dress under it that Nonna had pressed at six in the morning.
Adamo stood behind me at the wall, in a clean white shirt, and did not touch me.
He had asked, in the truck, whether he was allowed to be seen with me.
I had said, "Stand where I can find you."
The oldest capo struck the table with his cane.
"We have a Don to make," he said.
Enrico came in alone through the back door.
He wore a suit that Nonna had taken in at the shoulders.
The ring sat on his right hand.
His curly hair was still wet from the shower.
He looked at the head chair, and at the faces watching him.
"I'm still a baker," he said.
A low chuckle went around.
