Chapter 13: Empty

I kissed him until I had no breath left, and then I kissed him again.

His split lip was hot and salty under my mouth.

He let me bleed on him and didn't pull away.

"Get up," I said.

"Janelle."

"Get out of that chair and get on the floor."

He looked at me for one second, with the red marks of my hands on his face.

Then he stood and went down on the rug beside the bed, onto his back.

The empty revolver lay a yard from his head.

I kicked it under the bed with my bare foot.

I knelt over his hips in his own shirt and looked down at him.

I was twenty-four years old, and I had just pulled a trigger on the man under me.

I had never wanted anything so badly in my life.

"Hands on the floor," I said.

"Yes ma'am."

"Don't touch me until I say."

"Then say it fast," he said, and his voice had gone rough and low. "I'm only a man."

I laughed, and it broke in the middle.

I opened his belt with shaking hands.

He was hard already, thick and heavy against the cloth, and when I freed him he jumped in my fist.

I stroked him once, slowly, from the root, and watched his throat work.

"You're angry," he said.

"So angry."

"Good. Use it."

I let go of him and unbuttoned the shirt, one button at a time, until it hung open and he could see all of me.

His eyes went over my breasts and my stomach and the soft heavy line of my thighs.

His hands curled into the rug.

He didn't move them.

"Say what you want," I said.

"I want you to sit on my mouth."

My whole body clenched at the words.

"Is that an order?"

"It's a request," he said. "You give the orders tonight."

I shrugged the shirt off my shoulders and crawled up his body.
