Chapter 15: Silk
Benny found me in the kitchen on Saturday afternoon with a tray of lemon cookies and a face.
Rosa was upstairs on the phone with her friend from church.
Luciano had gone to the warehouse on Delancy Street to see two captains.
"Miss Janelle," Benny said. "Can I tell you something and have you not tell the boss I told you before I told him?"
"Benny. I'm not your confessor."
"I'm Catholic. It's close."
He sat down at the table, which creaked, and turned a cookie over in his huge fingers without eating it.
"I have a cousin," he said. "He drives for Mr. Brusco. Last night he called me at two in the morning, drunk, crying."
"About what?"
"About a thing he heard in the back seat." Benny's soft voice cracked. "Mr. Brusco was on the phone with a captain. He said the Hostetter girl isn't going to leave the party on her feet."
The cookie crumbled in his hand.
I kept my voice even.
"What else?"
"He said a pistol will be on the table at the engagement. A clean one, with no name on it. He said there'll be plenty of people in that room who'll swear they saw the driver's daughter pull it."
My mouth went dry.
"On Luciano," I said.
"On the Don." Benny's eyes were wet. "She walks in with a grudge against the family, everybody knows why. She shoots him in front of both families. Mr. Brusco's men put her down. Nobody asks a question, because everybody saw."
"And Brusco takes the chair."
"And Mr. Marchetti's daughter marries whoever Mr. Brusco says. Yes, miss."
I sat very still.
I thought of the revolver under the bed upstairs, and of how many people knew about my father.
I thought of Brusco swirling his wine.
"Tell Luciano," I said.
"I'm going to."
"Tell him tonight. And Benny?"
"Miss?"
"Thank you for the cookies."
