Chapter 20: Engagement Party
Brusco's banquet hall on McCarter Highway had gold chairs, white roses and two hundred candles.
I walked in at eight in the green dress.
My father's revolver sat in the skirt against my thigh, loaded with his six brass cartridges.
Luciano walked half a step ahead of me, in a black suit and a black shirt open at the throat.
Rosa walked behind in red, and behind her came Benny, in a tuxedo that had been let out twice.
Two of Brusco's men stood at the door.
They patted down every man who came in.
They looked at me, then at my beaded purse, and let me pass.
Brusco's men never searched women.
Benny's cousin, Brusco's driver, had told him that, and he was right.
The hall held two hundred people at round tables, captains and wives and cousins from three families.
On a platform at the far end stood a long head table covered in white linen.
A gold-framed card on it read Ferrante and Marchetti.
Old Marchetti sat in his wheelchair at its center.
His daughter sat beside him in white, with her hands folded around an empty handbag.
She lifted her eyes to mine across the room, once, and put them back on the cloth.
Brusco came toward us through the crowd with his arms spread.
He wore a tuxedo, the gold ring and a smile.
"Luciano," he said. "My boy."
"Carmine."
"And the guest of honor's guest." His gaze slid over me. "I saved you a seat, Miss Hostetter."
He pointed.
At the very back of the hall, between a pillar and the kitchen door, stood a small round table.
Two of his captains were already sitting at it.
A few people at the nearest tables snickered.
