Chapter 7: Rosa's Birthday

Rosa's birthday dinner started at four in the afternoon, because Rosa said gravy needed eight hours and respect.

I stood at her stove in an apron with a wooden spoon and a very bad idea of what I was doing.

"Stir the bottom," Rosa said. "No, the bottom, babe. You're petting it."

"I'm stirring."

"You're a waitress. You carry things. I'm teaching you to make something."

She pushed my elbow up and slid a meatball into my mouth with a fork.

I stopped talking.

It was the best thing I had eaten in my life.

"Told you," Rosa said smugly. "My grandmother's. Don't tell Benny, he thinks it's his mother's."

Benny, at the table behind us, was peeling potatoes in a cardigan.

"I heard that," he said.

"Good."

I laughed.

I hadn't known my mouth could do that so easily anymore.

Rosa bumped her hip against mine and lowered her voice.

"He's never brought anybody home," she said. "Not once. Thirty-four years old and a house with eleven bedrooms and nobody in them but me."

"It's a contract, Rosa."

"Sure it is, babe." She grinned. "I live across the hall from the contract."

"The whole house heard Saturday night. I had to sing in the shower."

I turned red from the collar of my apron up.

"I'm not sorry," Rosa said, sweetly. "I've been waiting for a woman to make that man lose his composure for six years."

Luciano came into the kitchen at five with a small box in his hand.
