Roark read it over my shoulder.
Then he took the phone out of my hand very gently.
"No," he said.
"I haven't said anything."
"You're thinking it so loud I can hear it through the bond."
We didn't make it to the barn after all.
We sat at the kitchen table until two in the morning with the phone face up between us, arguing in whispers so we wouldn't wake Addison.
Krista came down in her parka at midnight for a glass of water, read the text, and sat down too.
"He wants to say something to you where nobody can hear it," I said. "So let him."
"He wants you alone on a bridge at midnight," Roark said.
"He wants me to listen. Kyler's never once been able to stop talking when he thinks he's winning."
Krista put her glass down slowly.
"Oh," she said. "Oh, you want to wire yourself."
"I want you to."
She grinned for the first time all night.
"I've waited my entire life for someone to say that to me."
