Chapter 18: Stand For Her
The first thing I did was count.
Wednesday. Thursday. Friday night.
Two days and a bit.
Then I sat on the cot with my back against the cold stone and tried to feel Roark.
He was there.
Far off, but there.
Angry and steady and not moving.
He was keeping his promise.
Around noon I heard the first voices outside.
The cells had one window each, a slot of glass up at street level.
I stood on the cot and looked out at boots and tires.
Then at more boots.
Rubber boots. Work boots. A pair of pink sneakers.
Somebody started singing an old Yardley harvest song, badly, and other voices picked it up.
"What's that?" I called to the guard.
He was reading a newspaper in his chair at the end of the hall.
He turned a page.
"Your customers," he said.
By dark the singing had stopped, but the boots hadn't moved.
At midnight I could still see them, shifting in the streetlight.
They were standing out there in the frost.
I didn't sleep much.
Every time I closed my eyes I saw Addison on her bedroom floor with her hands on her ribs.
